Economy is about Serving the Needy

"No food is as tasty as eaten when hungry; Nothing proves its true worth until its necessity is felt. The feeling of necessity is what drives the economy. Serving the needy is the antidote to economic downturns" - Vishnu Pendyala

A comment I received by e-mail on this post from a respected Professor emeritus is that "regrettably wants not needs seem to drive consumerism (read economy)".

I agree that consumerism is driven by wants than needs. But for wants to be generated, needs must first be satisfied. The first step then is still to serve the needy and bring them to the level that would generate wants. - Vishnu Pendyala
